LET'S GO TO MEXICO – Thalassa Boom

Tacos, Tequila, Mariachis & a lot of fun... Let's go to Mexico!

This time my new adventure was Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende.
My excuse? My best friend’s wedding!

My best friend since childhood chose to get married in this little city located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Its Baroque/Neoclassical colonial structures, cultural institutes, artist, artisans and its well-preserved historic center are the main attraction there, filled with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. This and the nearby Sanctuary of Atotonilco have been declared World Heritage Sites in 2008.

It took us around 3 hours by car from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende. There was not much to see during the road trip but we found really good tacos on the way. We finally arrived at our stunning colonial hotel Belmont Casa de Sierra Nevada, a very charming and authentic place. Our suite had curtains hanging from the ceiling to the floor that made me feel like a real princess and all the amenities were made from local companies with organic ingredients. We had our own terrace with an outside hot tub that had a beautiful view on the garden and the center pool.

The location of our hotel was ideal...very close to the main plaza and shopping area, which made it really easy to walk everything. The breakfast with traditional Mexican food (as well as International food) was great, especially the Chilaquiles!!! We tried a couple of different restaurants in the are like San Augustin Chocolates & Churros and of course we went to try Churros! There was a long line since it is a very popular place, so we decided to order out and we ate our churros in the middle of a Mexican plaza with a beautiful colonial church in front of us; way better then a crowded restaurant! We also stopped by Panio, a beautiful bakery, to try what they called “chocolatin”. This basically is a croissant filled with chocolate and it's totally worth the calories!

For lunch I recommend the delicious Mexican plates like "tacos al pastor" which is a taco filled with pork and pineapple or try the 'quesadillas'.  And if you feel adventures enough maybe try the "Chapulines" which are grasshoppers! ;-)

After a wonderful weekend enjoying this cozy small town we went back to crowded  Mexico City. Our next stop was the archeological area of Teotihuacan which used to be the largest city in pre-Columbian America. Here we visited the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. After paying an entrance fee you can walk around and even climb to the top of the Pyramids. This place is absolutely breathtaking! Imagine how they build that incredible city in those days without any technology or modern machines.... Climbing the Pyramid of the sun, which is the biggest of the pyramids, was really fun. I enjoyed the energy and the beautiful view that surrounds me! I recommend anybody who visits Mexico City to explore this area!
